Proxy vs VPN

Different layers, different jobs

A VPN builds an encrypted tunnel and routes the whole device through it. Every application, every protocol, one exit address, and traffic between you and the VPN server is encrypted regardless of what the application does.

A proxy is configured per application and usually carries one protocol family. Your browser can use it while everything else on the machine ignores it, and encryption is whatever the application already had.

The important practical difference is granularity. A VPN gives you one identity for the device. A proxy setup gives you as many identities as you have profiles, each with its own address, which is why account work is built on proxies and not on VPNs.

The second difference is what the destination thinks of the address. Commercial VPN endpoints are hosting addresses and widely catalogued, so they are blocked by exactly the sites that block datacenter proxies.

When a proxy is the right tool

The rule of thumb is whether you need one identity or many:

Choosing between them

One device, private browsing on public wifi -> VPN
Many accounts, each with its own address -> proxies
Scraping with rotation                        -> proxies
Geo-specific checks from many countries -> proxies
Encrypting traffic an app sends in the clear -> VPN
  • Our residential targeting gives you 220+ countries from one login, which no VPN subscription matches in granularity.
  • Antidetect profiles need a separate address each. A VPN cannot provide that, because it is device-wide.
  • If you need encryption for a legacy protocol, a VPN or an SSH tunnel is the right tool and a proxy is not.
  • Streaming platforms block both, and for the same reason: the address class is visible.

Where the comparison is misused

A VPN is not more anonymous by default

Both providers can see your connections. The tunnel protects the local network segment, not your identity.

A proxy is not less secure

Your HTTPS traffic is encrypted in both cases. The difference is what happens to non-HTTPS traffic.

A VPN does not rotate

Commercial VPNs give one address per session and no targeting parameters.

Using both together rarely helps

It adds latency and makes failures ambiguous without changing what the site sees.
