Reviews live behind pagination and often behind scripts. Volume grows fast, and with per-gigabyte billing the cost follows page weight rather than review count.

Decide which markets you report on
One pass per country. A global crawl from a single address produces a number nobody can act on, because it belongs to no market in particular.
Send the language header that matches
The country decides which reviews are shown, the language header often decides which ones come first. Mismatched pairs return a sample you cannot compare across countries.
Hold a session across pagination
Use a sticky session so page two belongs to the same sample as page one. A rotating address mid-pagination silently mixes two markets.
Block media before scaling
Review pages carry avatars and photos. With images blocked a page is a fraction of the weight, and the data is identical.

- Record the page number too: a truncated pass is easy to mistake for a product with fewer reviews.
- Compare counts between passes. A sudden drop usually means the platform changed pagination, not that reviews were deleted.
Three ways the sample lies
One address for every market
The crawl finishes, the table fills, and every row belongs to the market your address sits in. Nothing in the data shows this, which is what makes it expensive.
Rotation in the middle of pagination
Page one comes from one country and page three from another. The product ends up with a review set that never existed anywhere.
Averaging across countries at the end
The per-country split is the whole point. Collapsing it back into one number rebuilds exactly the figure the platform already showed you for free.

Because it answers a different question. The visible average is weighted by whoever the platform decided to show you, and that is your own market plus whatever it thinks you read.
Do I need a proxy for app store reviews?
Yes, if you care about more than one country. App store listings, ratings and review sets are country-scoped by design, and there is no parameter that gets you another country’s set from outside it.
Rotating or sticky?
Sticky while you page through one product, rotating between products. Mixing the two the other way round is how samples get contaminated.
Is collecting reviews legal?
It depends on the platform’s terms, on what you store and on whose personal data ends up in your database. Review text often carries names. Ask a lawyer before you build a product on it.
