Serbia proxies

The country is pinned with a suffix in the login. Host, port and password stay the same as for any other country.

A city goes in as a second suffix. In Serbia it makes sense for the seven cities listed above; past them a city holds one network.

Telekom Srbija belongs to the state and trades as mts. It sits in the catalogue under three entries and they cannot be added up: the sum would give 68 cities, the union gives 66. Thirty two cities are left without it, a third of the country.

Cable operators come next. SBB in 26 cities, Sat-Trakt in 18, also under two entries rather than one. Yettel in 10, Jotel in 7, Orion in 5.

There are four large options here. If the target counts autonomous systems, you get spread in Belgrade and almost nowhere else: 64 cities out of 98 hold exactly one network.

This is the defining feature of the country in our catalogue. Vojvodina holds 39 cities of the 98, the Belgrade district five. So you slice Serbian geography across the northern plain rather than around the capital.

Belgrade itself remains the deepest city: twelve networks, five of them found nowhere else, including A1 and satellite Starlink. Novi Pazar and Niš share second place with five networks each.

Hence the fork. If you need different autonomous systems in one place, work in Belgrade. If you need spread across addresses and towns, work across Vojvodina: Subotica, Novi Sad, Zrenjanin, Senta, Bečej and another three dozen towns.

One company often sits under several entries. mts under three, Sat-Trakt under two, Orion under two, Next Fiber under three, Bau under two. We count the union everywhere, so our numbers come out smaller than adding catalogue rows would give.

Two entries in the tail are worth knowing in advance. The first is the network of the University of Niš: an address on it does not look like a home connection and is identified as educational. The second is Starlink in Belgrade, a satellite exit with its own quirks.

Both are rare, but if you pin a carrier blind by name, they are worth remembering.

We checked twenty well known Serbian domains from Europe with a full browser header set. Seventeen opened: KupujemProdajem, 4zida, Nekretnine.rs, Gigatron, Emmezeta, Maxi, Infostud, the Banca Intesa, NLB, OTP and Raiffeisen banks, RTS, Blic, Kurir, Mozzart, the eUprava portal and the tax authority.

Three closed, and all three through Cloudflare with a cf-mitigated header: Polovni Automobili, Limundo and Tehnomanija.

The coincidence is not one. What is closed is precisely the places where structured data with prices lives: the main used car board in the country and the largest auction site. Banks, government sites and media are open without our address. So in Serbia residential is needed for classifieds and product catalogues rather than in general.

Serbian is written in both Cyrillic and Latin, and the Serbian web splits along that line. We counted characters on five live pages. The tax authority carries 6858 Cyrillic characters against 80 Latin ones. The public broadcaster RTS carries 20619 against 975. The eUprava portal is roughly even.

And the other way round: the Blic newspaper has zero Cyrillic against 13688 Latin characters, and KupujemProdajem has zero as well. The state and public broadcasting write in Cyrillic, commerce and the tabloids in Latin.

The trap is that the lang attribute is the same on all five, sr or sr-RS. The markup will not tell you which alphabet you are getting. So keyword lists and parsing rules have to be kept in both spellings at once, or half of the Serbian results simply will not be found.

Plus the ordinary things: the currency is the dinar, not the euro, and a basket in euros gives away a foreigner.

Connections in Belgrade, Novi Sad and Niš hold well. Across Vojvodina they are acceptable, the cable build there is dense.

On size, plainly: twenty four networks by name, four of them large. Plan your load against four rather than twenty four, and remember that in 64 cities out of 98 there is nothing to swap to inside the city.

The short fork.

It is counted in traffic. A dollar per gigabyte.

Serbia is not in the European Union, it is a candidate, so the GDPR does not apply here directly. What applies is its own personal data protection law, passed in 2018 and built on the European model, overseen by a separate commissioner.

The practical difference for you: the rules are similar, but if something happens you deal with the Serbian regulator rather than a European one.

A proxy changes none of what you are allowed to do with data. It changes only which country the request appears to come from.

Confirm the exit is Serbian, that the session holds, and that a target with a bot check lets you in from a residential address while it does not from an ordinary one.
