New Zealand proxies

New Zealand most often gets bought by mistake in the form of Australia: the two markets are sold as one line and served as two. And the second thing people remember late: this is the southern hemisphere, so comparing its data with European data month by month lines up opposite seasons.

What we have in New Zealand

Prices are the same as in every other country we cover.

What New Zealand addresses get used for

Retail price monitoring

The Warehouse, Noel Leeming, PB Tech, Mighty Ape: New Zealand storefronts are separate from the Australian ones and the currency differs.

Trade Me in full

One platform covers classifieds, cars and property here, and it serves something else from outside the country.

Property

realestate.co.nz: the Auckland and Wellington rental markets need regular passes.

Local search and ad verification

google.co.nz, NZ Herald, Stuff, RNZ: campaigns are often bought across Australia and New Zealand together and served differently.

What looks different from outside New Zealand

These serve a New Zealand visitor something other than what a foreign one sees, because of broadcast rights and local catalogues. We sell addresses rather than a way past detection.

Which type to take for a New Zealand job

Cities people ask for here

Cities are set with the _city_ suffix. Auckland outweighs everything, and in a country of five million a city request runs into the size of the pool quickly.

AucklandA third of the country’s population and the main connectivity
WellingtonThe capital, the second pool
ChristchurchThe South Island, its largest city
HamiltonThe upper North Island
DunedinThe lower South Island, a thin pool

The setups people take here most often

  1. 01Residential, country levelThe default: the pool is small and a city usually just narrows it.
  2. 02New Zealand apart from AustraliaTwo passes over the same brands, because catalogues and currency differ.
  3. 03A fifty minute sticky sessionWhen a job has to run start to finish on one address.
  4. 04Mobile addressApps and platforms expecting a carrier.

Connection strings for New Zealand

The country code is NZ, upper case. The city goes after it with _city_, hyphens instead of spaces, in the order country, city, session, lifetime.

New Zealand addresses come through rotation and sticky sessions, with the lifetime set by the ttl suffix.

ANZ is a buying convenience, not a market

The main mistake in this country, usually made by whoever already has Australia configured.

Australia and New Zealand are sold and planned as one line, so in reports they routinely end up as one line on the way out too. On the serving side they are two countries: their own catalogues, prices, currency, delivery times and often a different range under the same brand.

An Australian address does not prove a New Zealand placement. Checking a campaign bought across the region takes two addresses and two passes. The temptation to use the Australian one is usually explained as saving money, but there is nothing to save: the address costs the same.

Retail works the same way. Chains operating in both countries keep separate storefronts, and the price of an identical item diverges routinely, and not merely by the exchange rate.

The practical conclusion for data: country is its own column rather than a label on the export. Otherwise six months later nobody can tell which half of the rows was the New Zealand one.

The calendar here runs the other way

The second thing, and it spoils conclusions more quietly than blocking spoils collection.

This is the southern hemisphere. When Europe is in winter, here it is summer, and range, seasonal sales and demand follow accordingly. A month-by-month comparison against northern data lines up opposite seasons and reports a difference the market never produced.

What to do about it. If you are building a picture across several countries, compare season against season rather than month against month: local summer here falls at the start of the calendar year.

Annual peaks are shifted too. Some categories peak in December and January not because the year is ending but because it is midsummer, and confusing those two explanations is expensive.

And a small thing that hits scheduling: the clock change here is inverted as well. Daylight saving starts in the northern autumn and ends in the northern spring, so the offset against Europe changes four times a year rather than twice.

What actually blocks you on New Zealand targets

The familiar split.

Retail chains and Trade Me filter server ranges and expect a home address: that means residential.

Publishers and government sites serve requests calmly.

Apps and the platforms grown out of them sometimes expect a carrier address: that is where mobile helps.

Search results are reachable but rate limited per address, and in a pool this size that limit arrives sooner than it would in a large country.

Which exits you get here, and how stable they are

The New Zealand pool in practical terms.

The pool is small: a country of five million people with a third of them in Auckland. Enough for monitoring and ad verification; not enough for high concurrency.

Response times from Europe are among the longest in our coverage: the country is far away and traffic crosses half the world. Thirty seconds is the minimum timeout here rather than a margin.

Because the round trip is long, connection reuse and sensible parallelism matter more than usual: a sequential pipeline that was tolerable in Europe becomes unaffordably slow here.

Sticky sessions hold an address for up to fifty minutes, and mobile rotates by physical reconnect: seconds rather than milliseconds.

Choosing the type for a New Zealand target

The order here is short.

  • Start with country-level residential: it passes on retail, Trade Me and search, and you pay only for the gigabytes you pull.
  • Take a city request only when comparing regions: the pool is small and a city narrows it noticeably.
  • If a job has to run on one address, add a sticky session with a lifetime.
  • If the target is an app and residential runs into a check, try a mobile address.
  • A 429 arrives sooner than your arithmetic predicts because of the pool size: lower the pace rather than adding workers.

What New Zealand sites check beyond the address

A New Zealand address opens the first gate; language, time and the spelling of place names decide the rest.

Send en-NZ. An en-AU header on a New Zealand address is uncommon, and on some platforms it switches you to the Australian storefront.

The number format is English: 1,299.90, a comma for thousands and a dot for decimals. The currency is the New Zealand dollar, which shares its sign with the Australian and American ones, so check for an NZD marker nearby.

The time zone is UTC+12, or UTC+13 in local summer, and as noted above the switch is inverted relative to the north.

Place names appear in te reo Māori forms, including with macrons over vowels. The same locality turns up both with and without them: normalise the spelling on intake, or you will collect duplicate records for one place.

What a month of New Zealand work costs

Three scenarios at our prices, so you have something to check a quote against.

  • Price monitoring across New Zealand retail, 12,000 listings a day with images blocked, roughly 110 KB per page. That is about 1.3 GB a day, around 40 GB a month: $40 on residential.
  • A second pass over Australia for a regional report doubles the volume: the per-gigabyte price is identical, so what you budget is traffic.
  • The long round trip does not change the invoice but it does change the runtime: budget more time rather than more money.

The legal part, stated plainly

New Zealand is not in the European Union, and GDPR does not apply here directly. Its own privacy legislation does, with its own commissioner, and collecting data that identifies people in the country is governed by it regardless of where your company sits.

This is general information rather than legal advice. Our terms require lawful use and we act on abuse reports. Where the answer carries commercial risk, ask a lawyer.

Verifying a New Zealand exit

Under a minute. The second command matters most here: it shows the real round trip time, which is what your collector’s architecture has to be built around.

Three checks

# 1. is the exit in New Zealand, and where
curl -s --max-time 30 -x login_c_NZ:password@proxy.sotaproxy.com:10000 https://ipinfo.io/json

# 2. what the round trip actually costs from here
curl -o /dev/null -s --max-time 30 -w "NZ: %{time_total}s\n" -x login_c_NZ:password@proxy.sotaproxy.com:10000 https://api.ipify.org
curl -o /dev/null -s --max-time 30 -w "AU: %{time_total}s\n" -x login_c_AU:password@proxy.sotaproxy.com:10000 https://api.ipify.org

# 3. does the fifty minute session hold
for i in 1 2 3; do
  curl -s -x login_c_NZ_s_42_ttl_50m:password@proxy.sotaproxy.com:10000 https://api.ipify.org; echo

Questions people ask before buying New Zealand addresses

Will an Australian address do?

No. On the serving side these are two countries: separate catalogues, separate prices, a different currency. An Australian address does not prove a New Zealand placement, and it saves nothing since the price is the same.

Why do annual peaks not match the European ones?

This is the southern hemisphere. December and January are midsummer here, so compare season against season rather than month against month.

Why is everything slow?

The round trip from here is among the longest in our coverage. Reuse connections, raise parallelism within reason, and keep the timeout at thirty seconds.

How many workers can I run here?

Not many. The pool is small, a third of the country is in Auckland, and per-address limits arrive sooner than in a large country.

Why are there duplicate places in my data?

Most likely the macrons in te reo Māori names: the same locality appears with and without them. Normalise the spelling on intake.

Do New Zealand addresses cost more?

No. Prices are the same everywhere: residential from $1.00 per GB, mobile from $5.76 per day.
