Chile proxies

Chile stands out for two things. First, it has the most competitive home internet market of any country in our pool. A hundred and thirty carriers across 237 cities, five of which cover more than fifty cities each: Movistar, VTR, Telefonica del Sur, Claro and GTD. Santiago alone holds 44 networks, more than any other city we have counted. Second, the country runs more than four thousand kilometres north to south, and it is the only place in our catalogue where picking a region changes not just the results you see but the physics of the route.

What a residential address gives you here

Cities people ask for here

A city is set with the _city_ suffix. In Chile that works more widely than usual: a dozen cities carry ten or more carriers each.

SantiagoForty four carriers, the densest city in our entire catalogue
RancaguaThirteen carriers, the O Higgins region
Puente AltoTwelve carriers, the capital agglomeration
AntofagastaTen carriers, in the north
TemucoTen carriers, in the south, Araucania region
TalcaTen carriers, the central valley

The setups people take here most often

  1. 01Residential plus SantiagoWhen you need capital-city results and the widest choice of networks
  2. 02Residential with a carrier pinnedWhen the target counts autonomous systems, and here there are five large ones to pick from
  3. 03Residential plus a southern or northern regionWhen what matters is a specific part of the country rather than the capital

Connection strings for Chile

The country is pinned with a suffix in the login. Host, port and password stay the same as for any other country.

A city goes in as a second suffix. Choosing a city makes more sense in Chile than in most countries: beyond Santiago there are a dozen cities where the pool carries ten or more networks.

There is genuinely something to choose between here

Our catalogue lists 17 regions, 237 cities and 130 carriers for Chile. What matters is not the number but how it is spread.

Movistar covers 126 cities, VTR 108, Telefonica del Sur 55, Claro 52, GTD 50. Then come Mundo, Entel, Manquehue and a long tail of local networks. Five operators each covering more than fifty cities is unusual: in most countries in our catalogue there is one such carrier, at best three.

What that buys you in practice. If your target counts requests by autonomous system, pinning a carrier in Chile really does move you between networks, and there are five options rather than two. Forty four networks inside Santiago mean you can change AS without even leaving the capital.

Four thousand kilometres north to south

Chile is the only country in our catalogue where geography affects the work physically rather than only through what you are served. From Arica in the north to Punta Arenas in the south is more than four thousand kilometres, and domestic traffic routes through Santiago.

In practice an exit in Puerto Montt or Antofagasta is slower than a capital one, and the difference shows in tens of milliseconds rather than percentages. If your job is sensitive to response time, stay in Santiago. If your job is about regional differences in results or prices, then a regional exit is exactly what you need and the extra milliseconds are the price of accuracy.

The pool mirrors where people live: the Metropolitan region gives 47 cities, Valparaiso 30, Los Lagos 22, O Higgins 21. Everything else is thinner.

What blocks you here beyond the address

Chilean Spanish differs noticeably from the Spanish of Spain or Mexico, and local sites account for that. But something else matters more to a target: the RUT, the local identification number, is asked for more often than in neighbouring countries and turns up regularly at checkout.

Prices are in Chilean pesos, the nominal figures are large, and a basket in dollars gives away a foreigner instantly.

The country changes its clocks, in the southern hemisphere and not in step with Europe, so a mismatch between device time and address time is easy to catch here.

How stable the exits are here

Santiago and the larger cities run fibre and connections hold well. In the southern regions and in the northern desert networks are sparser and drops are more frequent.

A rule of thumb: run long sessions through a capital carrier, and use regional exits for jobs that survive a drop.

Choosing the setup for a Chilean target

The short fork.

  • Capital-city results or speed: residential plus Santiago.
  • The target counts autonomous systems: pin a carrier, there are five large ones here.
  • You need regional differences: pin the region and accept a slower response.
  • Volume with no pinning: rotate across the country.

What a month of Chilean work costs

It is counted in traffic. A dollar per gigabyte.

  • Price checks across a few hundred listings a day: single gigabytes a month.
  • A daily sweep of a large Falabella or Ripley category: tens of gigabytes.
  • Account work through a browser: a few hundred megabytes per account per day.

The legal part, stated plainly

Chile has its own data protection law, and in recent years it has tightened noticeably towards the European model. It does not forbid collecting publicly posted prices and listings; it does regulate processing personal data.

A proxy changes none of what you are allowed to do with data. It changes only which country the request appears to come from.

Verifying a Chilean exit

Confirm the exit is Chilean, that the carrier is the one you asked for, and that the target serves its local version.

Three checks

# 1. is the exit Chilean, and on which carrier
curl -s -x login_c_CL:password@proxy.sotaproxy.com:10000 https://ipinfo.io/json

# 2. does a sticky session hold the same address
for i in 1 2 3; do curl -s -x login_c_CL_s_600:password@proxy.sotaproxy.com:10000 https://api.ipify.org; echo; done

# 3. does the target serve the Chilean version
curl -s -x login_c_CL:password@proxy.sotaproxy.com:10000 -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code} %{url_effective}

Questions people ask before buying Chilean addresses

Are there really forty four carriers in Santiago?

Yes, that is how many our pool holds for that city. It is more than any other city in the catalogue, and it means you can change autonomous system without leaving the capital.

How much slower are the regional exits?

Noticeably. Domestic traffic routes through Santiago and the distances run into thousands of kilometres. If response time is critical, take the capital.

Can I pin a specific operator?

Yes. The carrier is set when you create the endpoint. In Chile it is worth doing: there are five large operators rather than one.

Is one gigabyte enough to try?

For testing a hypothesis it usually is: a few thousand pages without images, or a couple of hundred full browser loads.
